NOW LET’S GET TO THE PICKS (reading time: 2 minutes)
Nathan MacKinnon o4.5 SOG (-105)
What is there not to like about MacKinnon? This man has already racked up 7 points for the season, and we’re only three games into the season for Colorado. Anyway, I’m sure this number will move as the day progresses. Last season during the postseason, this man averaged 6 SOG per game! Hitting the over (4.5) 71% of the time. Crazy numbers. This season he’s returned with the same energy. Over his first three games, he has 16 SOG and 24 Shot Attempts. And his history against the Jets last season is as beautiful. Last season MacKinnon had 35 SOG and a massive 45 Shot Attempts in four games – averaging 8.75 SOG per game. This season he’ll be facing a Jets team that is allowing 35 SOG over their last two games.
Sam Bennett o2.5 SOG (-140)
Last season Bennett was my dude. Guy was the key player on that second line for the Panthers. He hit this over (2.5) 63% of the time last season. Now he returns to a different team that needs more of him. Initially, he didn’t play well in his first game on the ice against the Islanders, as he had 0 SOG and 3 Shot Attempts. However, since that game his last two games, Bennett has shown up. Over his previous two games, he has 8 SOG and 15 Shot Attempts. Last season when he faced the Flyers, he had 11 SOG and 17 Shot Attempts in three games – averaging 3.66 SOG per game. Bennett will be facing an undefeated Flyers team which, besides all of that, is still seeing 35 SOG per game.
Nikolaj Ehlers o3.5 SOG (+120)
I’m a bit confused as to why we’re getting plus odds on Ehlers. I mean, sure, he had a crap previous season, but I think we’re seeing a different Ehlers out of the gate already. He’s only hit 1/2 the over this season, but that’s still 7 SOG. And really, here’s the vital factor – Ehlers has 19 SHOT ATTEMPTS in two games. Yea, 19. That’s a pretty significant number for just two games. And although last season he wasn’t great, he still managed to get 15 SOG and 23 Shot Attempts in three games – averaging 5 SOG per game. Colorado is a great team, but still, a team that has allowed ten goals over their last three games and 27.6 SOG per game. I think Ehlers can get this done, especially with the amount of Shot Attempts he’s taking.
